I just realized that I have a lot of crap food.
I also just realized that my Mom’s observation of me was 100% annoyingly accurate.

Fun Fact #1: Today just so happens to be the 1st birthday of LifeIsGoodWithFood. It’s been… an interesting year, to say the least. When I first started this blog, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I honestly thought that this blog would just be a way to organize my thoughts, to receive input from fellow bloggers and readers, as well as to experiment in the kitchen on dishes and then try my best to remember that I need to take pictures for my blog.
Needless to say, taking pictures of the food before even allowing the Boyfriend to touch it was agonizing. For him, I mean.
There was also a period in time in which I didn’t update my blog nearly as often as I should’ve. There was just so many things that I was dealing with in terms of family, relationships, and friendships. It was very fortunate for me that the issues about my family worked out perfectly and that everyone is now home safe and sound where they belong. In terms of relationships, the Boyfriend and I are getting along so much better now that he bought me the digital camera to stop my constant yapping and little hissy fits. Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without that man in my life. Oh wait. I do know.
I’d probably still be using my crappy Canon.
But friendship was the one thing that I learned the most this year and it’s been a very delicate lesson to me, one that I’ll always remember. In this past year since I started this blog, I reconnected with my best friend from middle school. We attended the same middle school but ended up going to different high schools. I was so depressed by the fact that we were attending different schools that I promised myself I would arrange to transfer into her school when I became a sophomore. However, things changed so much for us that eventually I decided to stay in the high school where I graduated from and I ended up making friends with awesome people. These awesome people I still talk to now, by the way.
But it was my reconnection with Winni that really made this blog important to me. Back in high school, we barely hung out with each other but when we finally did get the chance, we would talk for hours. There was no stopping us from chatting on the phone, to IMing on AIM, to the present which is now texting for us (we keep our friendship on a technologically advanced level). Along with her, I also reconnected with our other friend, Seeling, and the three of us saw each other more in this one year after I graduated from college than we ever did after graduating from middle school.
Being friends with them two has made me realize that friendships are precious and so important! It’s made me realize that you and your friends don’t have to see each other every single day, you don’t have to do everything together, you don’t have to gabble on the phone/IM/text everyday. You can make other friends, see different people, but the most important thing is that at the end of the day, when you two finally do reconnect and see each other again, the bond will still be there. No love will have been lost. There will be no awkwardness. It will just be our friendship. Sounds kind of sappy, but it’s true.
Friends keep your head level even though sometimes they drive you up the wall. We share our secrets, our thoughts, our complaints, everything. We even share Winni’s baby boy sometimes.
I didn’t just learn about family and friendship upon writing this blog. I also learned about love and what it truly means to be healthy. I used to be so depressed in high school because I would juice fast for 24 hours, then the next day I would tell myself, Okay Sylvia, you’re only going to eat a small yogurt tonight and then you’re going to go on the treadmill for 3 hours. 3 hours on the treadmill might’ve happened, but I also ended up binge eating and then freak out when I was eating over 2,000 calories a day. It was not what I wanted and I stressed over it because I had no one to talk to about it.
Love. I love my Boyfriend, there’s no doubt about that. Of course, that didn’t take me three years to figure out, or else I would be in deep doodoo But it did take me seven years to love my body. Obviously, along with love, there was also cursing in the mirror at the flubber that I see, at the way that my legs jiggle when I walk or run or do a DVD workout. Real adulation was thrown in there somewhere along the way on this pathetically long journey, but I reached it and I can honestly say that I’m finally happy with my body. Of course I still want to lose weight, not for aesthetic reasons but for my personal health in the long run. I also want people to realize that losing weight doesn’t have to mean eating two almonds a day or putting a lock on the cabinet where all your potato chips and peanut M&M’s are stored.
The main reason for me writing this blog was to reach out to the community of bloggers who have dealt with the same issues that I’m dealing with now, some who are still dealing with fluctuating numbers, weight loss plateaus, body dysmorphic disorder, and even bulimia, and not only have readers discover that they’re really great, but to have myself discover that as well. It’s incredibly important to love yourself all throughout your weight loss journey, to not look in the mirror and go, “Ugh, I look so FAT!” and for you to eventually realize that if you really do need help from someone who’s been there, done that before, you are not alone.
So to celebrate this joyous occasion of my blog turning 1, I will be doing my first giveaway.
I will be giving away not one, but TWO HUGE box of goodies from yours truly, stuff that I bought from Nutsonline, Natural Grocers, and other local grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Foods that I will not be able to finish in the next lifetime or so. So that would include a 1-lb. bag of blue cornmeal, a huge bag of brown rice flour (as much as I can scoop; sorry if you’re iffy on the contamination of the brown rice flour to my hands or the air – I have a 25-lb. bag with no way of getting rid of it!) that will be in a Ziploc bag, and grains. So much grains. Lots of other goodies (for example, stevia in whichever form you prefer, either in liquid or box form, grains, nut butter, oh and more grains). Oh, plus tea. Lots and lots of tea. More tea than I could possibly ever finish in this lifetime.
